TFTW – Update

Hey Guys! WOW! it's been a while since I posted. Trying to manage all my time to fit in regular practice has been quite a challenge over the last few weeks, however I've managed to get at least an hour or two in the woodshed most days. The biggest challenge has been using the time I have had wisely. After an impromptu "Blues Jam" a few days ago I was left with the feeling that my stamina was lacking (where it concerned soloing longer than a few choruses, that is!) I was generally quite happy with my phrases and lines, but my execution could of been lot better. To be honest I'm not really that surprised considering I've rarely  been in a playing situation in the last 5 years where I'm allowed to solo freely and longer then 4 bars. So with my eyes now opened to these "new" flaws, I will be cutting out all the fat in my practice plan so that the main focus will be on improvising, well...

TFTW – Week 8

Right then! I have to say my practice plan hasn’t really changed too much, however recently I’ve been forced to make a few alterations and adjustments to fit the practice sessions around unexpected things that have cropped up, such as car trouble etc. Looking at my notes from last week’s sessions, I appeared to of slacked off on transcription. So my plan is to transcribe some licks or maybe 1-2 choruses of a jazz solo this weekend. I have to say I’m noticing some improvements in my left hand so this week all my exercises are gonna be picking hand heavy.  Today’s session is listed below.   Permutations (focusing on upstrokes) Cross picking   Scales – in groups of 6’s and arpeggio sequences Flight of the Bumblebee ( excerpt) Road games – Will begin learning solo tomorrow    ...

TFTW – Week 6

Hi again, So it’s been a while since my last post. I got back home last Sunday from a 10 day trip where I was stranded in the middle of nowhere with no music, mobile phone, computer, absolutely no contact with the civilised world. Monday morning, after a couple of hours checking emails, messages etc. I jumped back into the practice seat. Unfortunately this week (so far) has been really busy so I had to put a few items such as “music reading” and “Road games” on the back burner. Earlier in the week I began learning  songs for a potential cover gig, which btw fell through in the end :(  and a couple of days ago I got a call from some friends asking me if I would like to record a couple of solo ideas for a song they’re currently writing. So, I've definitely been making good use of my practice time. Now that this week is coming to a close, things seem to be...

TFTW – Week 4

Wow!! time flies by so quick, I can’t believe it’s already the end of January. From tomorrow I’ll be taking a break from the practice plan as I have an event coming up where I will be unable to play or listen to any music for a couple of weeks. It’s a real shame as I have noticed some big improvements in my technique over the last few sessions, however it’s only a few days and I’ll be back in the woodshed again from around the 11th February. If you haven’t already, please like my page on facebook and keep your eyes peeled for some free lessons, licks, etc. coming soon....

TFTW – Week 3 – Down with the sickness

Yay! After three days lying in bed sick I’m back in the practice seat. I’m one of those people who are rarely ever sick so when I am ill, it’s bad.  By the end of the first day I started to feel withdrawal symptoms from the guitar. However I used my recovery time wisely by watching some inspiring documentaries on musicians such as Miles Davis and some “Return to Forever” concert clips I found on YouTube. Today I managed to get in roughly two and a half hours practice.  You can see what I covered in my session below. Who knows, I may even get another hour in later tonight. Warm up – m7b5 & dom7 chords and inversions, chromatic permutations Technique – Triad sequences - Major, Melodic Min. and Harmonic Min. scales                          4 note groupings - 3NPS Min. Pentatonic shapes, Diminished, Wholetone scales Music reading – Some mixed rhythm reading Road Games – Tapping section Improvisation – Free play (no backing), working on melodic ideas...
